Region: Ribera del Duero, Spain
Vintage: 2021
Composition: Tempranillo, Albillo, Garnacha and Bobal
History: Dominio del Águila is a family winery with organic certification in La Aguilera, a small town in Ribera del Duero, run by the couple Jorge Monzón and Isabel Rodero, vigneron and architect respectively since 2010. The domain has 30 hectares of very old and 5 relatively young hectares (less than 50 years old). They have also supplied grapes to some of the region’s top wineries for over ten vintages. Jorge comes from a family of many generations of vignerones. He studied ‘Soil, viticulture, and enology’ at the Universities of Bordeaux and Burgundy. He has worked with prestigious wineries such as Domaine De La Romanée-Conti, in Spain with the Vega Sicilia Group, and as technical director of Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro. Since 2013, he has been working full-time at Dominio del Águila. Pícaro Tinto is a co-fermented blend of mainly Tempranillo with Albillo, Garnacha, and Bobal – fruit that is strictly selected from parcels chosen for its quality and in response to harvest conditions. More excellent sites are favored in warmer years, and warmer sites are used in more fantastic crops. The soils are heavier in clay, which in a dry climate like the Ribera del Duero prevents stress on the vine and promotes uniform and simultaneous ripening of fruit and stems. This wine is suitable for vegans.
Tasting Notes:
“Very complex, light pink. Berry aromas with baking spices, wild herbs, and bright floral notes. It is musky and luscious on the palate with a truly excellent textural design and a smooth, fine, fresh finish of red, orange, and strawberry. Drink now.” – James Suckling.
