Region: Napa Valley, California

Vintage: 2016

Composition: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot

History: If Abreu has a nucleus, it is without a doubt Madrona Ranch. It was the first property David fell in love with and developed in the 1980s. The canyons and switchbacks that meander through the site, the soils ranging from Aiken red to white tuff to dark clay and rocks, it is a magical place. Harvest selections are meticulous, often spanning weeks, but the diversity creates incredible complexity and many blending options. Madrona is also a working ranch. In fact, cattle have claimed more than their fair share of real estate. Cattle, goats, pigs, chickens, even bees, living in one of the old barns on the property. “We take care of the animals and leave the bees alone,” says David. “However, we collect the honey. We consider it a fair rent.”

Tasting Notes:

Abreu Las Posadas features aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, blueberries and cassis, floral notes of violets and herbaceous and earthy touches and liquorice. On the palate it is rich, robust and lively. This is a full-bodied, burly wine with firm and granular tannins and a long and flavoursome finish.
