Region: Valladolid, Spain

Composition: 100% Tempranillo

History: Fompedraza, a small town in Valladolid with a winemaking tradition within the D.O. Ribera del Duero, has witnessed how the brothers Benito Hernando-Gaspar, Fernando and Javier- have developed the Bodegas Briego project, thus recovering the tradition that their father already practiced almost fifty years ago. The enthusiasm deposited in Briego is great, synonymous with the fight for the quality of the wine and better management of the vineyard, detailed work, and revitalizing this town, Fompedraza. After restructuring and recovering the old vineyards in 1988, new plantations were carried out in Curiel de Duero, Peñafiel, and Fompedraza municipalities. A widely dispersed vineyard, always looking for the best land to grow the jewel of Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo, or Tinto Fino, with altitudes reaching 910 meters. Seeing these hawthorns, one realizes that the quality of Briego’s wines is gestated in the field, with vines devotedly cared for, at the mercy of a continental climate that brings out the best of each of these plants. This family business currently has 77 hectares, all Tempranillo except for a testimonial percentage of the Merlot variety.

Tasting Notes:

A brick-red wine with garnet flashes and a medium-high layer, clean. Aromas of scrubland (thyme, rosemary, some lavender) along with hints of very ripe red fruits. Delicate dairy products reminiscent of pastry bathed in balsamic menthol are appreciated. In the mouth, it is intense, with a mature character and sweet and smooth tannins. It is clean and friendly, without concentration or aggressiveness. Memories of ripe forest fruits such as blackberries, currants, and blueberries in jam appear wrapped in cooking aromas.
