History: Algueira winery, located in the Ribeira Sacra region of Galicia, Spain, is celebrated for its dedication to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the area. Founded in the late 1990s by Fernando González and his wife, the winery has gained recognition for its meticulous vineyard practices and traditional winemaking techniques. Algueira specializes in indigenous grape varieties such as Mencía, Godello, and Alvariño, crafting wines that are both expressive and balanced. Nestled on the steep slopes overlooking the Sil River, Algueira’s vineyards benefit from a distinctive microclimate, resulting in wines with exceptional character and depth.

“A mind-blowing Ribeira Sacra red with pure fruit. Grapefruit, flowers, iron and chalk. Mineral, with subtle white pepper and blueberries. Really expressive, yet not sassy. Restrained and pure with plenty of fruit, but there is nothing too fleshy or sumptuous about the fruit. Complex, nuanced and full of nerve. So harmonious. A serious and persistent Ribeira Sacra that makes you want to finish the bottle. Great depth, too. Mencia, brancellao, merenzao, caino and souson. 6,658 bottles made. Drink or hold.” – James Suckling
