History: The Mongeard family arrived in Vosne-Romanée in the 18th century, with records showing a Mongeard working as a vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1786. In 1945, Jean Mongeard, whose mother was a Mugneret, found himself making wine at the age of 16 in place of his father who had died years before. The entire 1945 vintage was purchased by Baron le Roy, the Marquis de Angerville and Henri Gouges. Gouges instructed the young Mongeard to personally bottle the wines, rather than sell them by the barrel. In 1975, Vincent Mongeard, Jean’s son, began working alongside his father and became responsible for viticulture and vinification of the estate’s wines. He convinced his father to go back to the traditional method of bottling without filtration, filtering only with certain vintages. Jean Mongeard retired in 1995, and Vincent assumed complete leadership of the domain. Today, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret covers a total area of more than 75 acres, divided into 35 appellations. The varied range of climates in which the Mongeards own vineyards naturally results in wines of great diversity.

Tasting Notes:

Fixin wines are delicate in colour and have an excellent structure in which tannins usually play a dominant role, making these wines robust rather than subtle. They have a good acid content and are endowed with a solidity and substance which places them among wines that are best laid down for a certain time. When young they possess animal aromas suggestive of pelts and musk. These are ample wines which develop their bouquet over time as they mature.
