Region: Terre di Chieti Pecorino IGT, Italy
Composition: 100% Pecorino
History: The story began with Gino Umani Ronchi in Cupramontana, the heart of Verdicchio Classico, more than half a century ago. Today, the Umani Ronchi wine estate is owned by the Bianchi-Bernetti family, which since 1959 has been making excellent quality artisan wines, sourcing the best from Verdicchio and Montepulciano, two varieties that find their best expression in Marche and Abruzzo. The winery is managed by Michele Bernetti, who combines his leadership and technical role with the development of the international market. At his side, his father Massimo Bernetti serves as president of Umani Ronchi. Umani Ronchi is driven by a strong sense of ethics and respect for the environment, lavishing attention to the territory and biodiversity, and each choice reflects a sustainable way of thinking and acting. All the vineyards, from Verdicchio to Montepulciano, are grown organically. The name of the Pecorino grape variety, also known as the “sheep grape”, derives from the strong connection between ranching and agriculture and the presence of this grape variety in sheep grazing areas. The variety had almost disappeared due to its very low productivity. Our Pecorino Project began in 2005 and represents the new mission of Umani Ronchi: the discovery and utilization of native Adriatic varieties, as well as the strengthening of our position in the Abruzzi region.
