History: The Wemyss family has had a long history of passion for single malt whiskey and their connections to the industry date back to the early 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig’s) built his first distillery on Wemyss land. Even today, the barley from the Wemyss Estate is prized by many of the leading distillers, and Cameron Bridge Distillery is just a few miles from the castle. With this passion came the gradual realization that, even for the informed consumer, much of the single malt whiskey terminology can be confusing. Our range of artisan malts was conceived with the aim of making them more accessible and understandable. We use the flavor and aromas of individual whiskeys to identify each bottling, rather than the distillery, so that the consumer can more easily understand the style they are buying. Up to 16 different malt whiskeys are expertly blended before unique malts are introduced to create three distinct flavor profiles under the guidance of Charles Maclean: ‘Spicy’ (Spice King), ‘Peaty’ (Peat Chimney) and ‘Honeyed’. (The Hive). Since our founding of Wemyss Malts in 2005, it has been independently run by sibling duo William and Isabella, who are related to the Scottish Wemyss family. Enchanted by time spent with expert wine blenders in the South of France, William Wemyss was inspired to create distinctive and bold Scotch whiskeys. Isabella Wemyss, with her eye and nose for uncompromising quality, began sourcing exquisite single malts from Scotland and the finest oak casks from around the world.
