Region: Napa Valley, California

Vintage 2019

Composition: 75.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16.2% Merlot, 4.0% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc

History: In 1886, a fearless Victorian widow who could often be seen riding a horse, Josephine Tychson, built and operated the original winery on our estate, farmed the land, and became Napa Valley’s first registered winemaker. In 1939, in southern California, three businessmen bought Lombarda Cellars, combining their names: Charles Freeman, Marquand Foster, and Albert “Abbey” Ahern at Freemark Abbey. In 1976, one of twelve American wineries was chosen to compete in “The Judgment of Paris” blind tasting, and Freemark Abbey was the only winery represented by red and white wine. California wines win in every category, catapulting Napa Valley onto the world stage. In 1985, Ted Edwards became the winemaker. After three decades at the helm of Freemark Abbey, Ted is one of California’s leading winemakers, saying, “I remain a passionate student of viticulture, always learning about regions, climate, soils, varieties, and new techniques.”

Tasting notes:

The dark and opaque ruby color introduces this wine that expresses the aromas and flavors of black fruits. With a spicy, sweet oak complexity, the wine exudes dark fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, and dark cherry. There are shades of dark chocolate, chocolate truffle with berries dusted with cocoa powder, cola, aromatic cedar, cinnamon, cloves, graham crackers, and a hint of tobacco. The body has a smooth entry and dark cherry/berry flavors that develop throughout. With great texture and mouthfeel, this Cabernet is full-bodied, rich, and opulent,… delicious.
