Region: Rioja, Spain

Vintage: 2019

Composition: Red Blend

History: The first Spanish wine to make it to La Place de Bordeaux. He has had it under wraps for 10 years. Finally, his confidence has emerged; and Telmo Rodríguez has got Yjar in through quite a big door.

Yjar is a red wine from the D.O.Ca. Rioja, the personal project of winemaker Telmo Rodriguez that has managed to break into La Place de Bordeaux, one of the oldest and most prestigious wine markets in the world. This wine was the first Spanish red wine to make it to this market with 800 years of history (set up by the English and Dutch in the 16th century), where the great bottles produced in Bordeaux are currently sold to merchants from all over the world. However, for the past 20 years there has also been some room in this arena for other wines from others countries, like Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s Almaviva (Chile), Opus One (California) and the Italian wine Massetto.

Tasting Notes:

Unfurls a spectrum of aromas, with highlights of fruits such as blueberries, interwoven with a delicate hint of spices (pepper) and nuanced herbal and woody scents. On the palate, it manifests with a subtle tension and a medium to full body where its plentiful yet refined tannins stand out. A superb high-end wine, exceedingly succulent with an extended and polished finish, it promises a favorable evolution.
